An ideational and study-based Urban and Architectural Concept Competition entry for a major cultural hub in Krakow, Poland.
Project Overview
The project envisions creating a vibrant urban district named the "City of Music and Sound", seamlessly connecting world-class concert venues (the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic, Capella Cracoviensis, and Sinfonietta Cracovia) with public spaces, educational facilities, commercial zones, and the natural landscape of the Vistula River (waterfront strategy).
Goals
To create an iconic cultural hub: Establish a recognized, landmark destination for classical music that positions Krakow as a leading cultural capital.
To revitalize the waterfront: Turn the neglected river banks into an active public space by physically and visually connecting the new architecture to the Vistula River.
To integrate heritage with modernity: Uncover, restore, and transform the historical Luneta Grzegórzecka Fort into a thriving social center equipped with everyday retail and hospitality services.
To build a cohesive multi-user ecosystem: Seamlessly merge academic spaces, student housing, a hotel, youth education facilities, and public forums to foster daily community engagement beyond just concert hours.
To optimize flow and accessibility: Solve infrastructural barriers by integrating efficient multi-modal transport, pedestrian/bicycle connections across the river, and smart parking solutions to handle peak event surges.

Research
Designing a major cultural district on a complex, underutilized urban site required diagnosing both structural constraints and functional goals. Before drafting the spatial concept, a comprehensive site analysis and functional mapping were conducted to identify key determinants and challenges.
Context analysis
Site determinants
The area was defined by the Vistula River and its banks (Bulwar Kurlandzki), a railway embankment with a bridge to the east, the historical underground remnants of the Luneta Grzegórzecka Fort, a north-south line of mature trees, and proximity to Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University.
Functional and programmatic determinants
Evaluating the integration of multi-hall music complexes, revitalized fort spaces for community-building retail (cafes, restaurants, bookstores), and campus expansions including student housing, a hotel, youth music education centers, and parking structures along the railway embankment.
Infrastructural framework
Assessing the need to tie into new road networks (connecting Kotlarska/Stachowskiego nodes with Aleja Pokoju), public transit corridors, and the planned Metropolitan Fast Railway station.
Challenges
Bridging spatial barriers: The site was heavily fragmented by natural and man-made barriers—specifically the Vistula River separating two academic hubs (Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University and the Music Academy) and an existing railway embankment dividing the area from the city.
Preserving historical heritage: Uncovering, restoring, and integrating the historical, subterranean remnants of the 19th-century Luneta Grzegórzecka Fort into a modern, public-facing district.
Managing multi-user ecosystems: Balancing the needs of diverse user groups—artists, classical music audiences, students, tourists, and local residents—through a complex mix of cultural, educational, commercial, and residential functions.
Traffic and capacity management: Solving intense traffic surges and parking demands immediately after major concert events without disrupting local infrastructure.
Strategy
Our approach focused on translating complex site constraints into a cohesive, multi-layered urban ecosystem centered around the riverfront and historical heritage. By treating mobility, public space, and functional zoning as interconnected systems, we laid the groundwork for a vibrant destination that balances cultural prestige with everyday community utility.
Design guidelines
Ecosystem organization
Designing a linear public forum along the river that connects the historical fort with modern cultural anchors, transforming post-industrial and neglected areas into a major city-shaping focal point.
Mobility and multi-modal integration
Solving complex traffic flows by introducing a new connecting road, pedestrian-bicycle paths, and an innovative, cost-effective solution: attaching a pedestrian-bicycle footbridge directly to te existing railway bridge to unify both riverbanks without heavy structural disruption.
Phased functional zoning
Balancing cultural prestige with commercial sustainability by integrating mixed-use service buildings along the railway embankment and establishing hierarchical parking systems (underground, semi-covered, and street-level) to handle post-concert traffic peaks efficiently.
Final Design
The final design brings our strategy to life through striking architectural forms and thoughtful integration with Krakow’s natural and historical landscape. By balancing iconic waterfront concert halls with human-scale community spaces, the concept delivers a cohesive and vibrant cultural destination.
Our solution
The "City of Music and Sound" architecture: Expressive steel-and-glass concert halls mirror in the Vistula River, creating a new visual icon, with the Philharmonic hall partially integrated into the riverbed.
Heritage revitalization: The historical Luneta Grzegórzecka Fort is restored under a glass roof and transformed into a social and commercial hub with cafes, restaurants, and music shops..
Human-centric scale: Surrounding buildings—including the Music Academy, dormitories, hotel, and youth center—maintain a modest, human-scale aesthetic while achieving high density.
Award
Our team was awarded 2nd place in the competition by the City of Krakow for:
A successful spatial attempt, unique on the scale of Krakow, to create a new architectural climax in the area of the Vistula embankments.
A dynamic yet restrained architectural language of the music facilities within the new centre.
